Hello! Here we are - part 2 of the Issue 3 breakdown.
A Florist's Eye - Victoria Pettyt, Victoria Rose Florals
Victoria is a florist using exclusively British-grown flowers. Her eye is just gorgeous and I knew I wanted to create a new section of the magazine called 'A Florist's Eye' - a place possibly for more poetic writing on the very beautiful natural gifts we are given in the UK. She excelled herself and I really love this article!
DISCOVER
Issue 3 has six independent businesses to discover including Wiggly Wigglers and Made by Alkemi. If you feel your business would fit well in this section, please get in touch!
Hot Beds - Jack First (Buy his book here)
I started following Jack First a few years ago and saw earlier this year that he had rewritten his book, Hot Beds. I knew Charles Dowding was using a hot bed in his greenhouse to help with late winter/early spring propagation, but that was my only knowledge of hot beds. I read Jack's book and felt compelled to shout about it, I really think they could be a good solution to our shorter hardy annual seasons due to hotter, drier late springs. Thankfully Jack was more than willing to write an article all about them for us. He's a lovely bloke!
Pricing Wreath Workshops - Naomi Pollinger, Radnage Flowers
A little checklist for anyone in a twist over pricing. Pricing is a huge topic, and Naomi broke the workshop cost list down very nicely so you don't forget a thing.
Growing for Weekly Markets - Catherine Angell, Flower's Bottom
Catherine has been attending a weekly market for years and her wealth of knowledge around how to grow for consistency is incredible. She reached out to me, offering to write this article and I can't thank her enough! Brilliant piece of writing. I found it so galvanising.
Growing Community - Sofie Stewart, Editor
Me again! I loved Robin Wall Kimmerer's The Serviceberry so much that I couldn't not write this article. It felt very relevant, and had so many ideas for working with the earth (and all its people) to still make a decent, honest, sustainable living - so I shared some here.
Small Space Flower Farming - Anastasia Summers, The Prairie Edit
Ana writes brilliantly about how she does it. She has a small space by most reckonings, at just over half an acre. She interplants and underplants and pulls things and replaces them with such deft that it's truly mind-boggling. Like an alchemist in the garden.
On Floral Creativity - Shanna Ludwig, Harebell & Bee
Shanna's art stirs something very deeeeeep in me. Such exquisite human creativity on display, her eye for detail is wonderful to behold. I was very grateful that she was willing to be interviewed and she talked all about her creativity and process.
Of Seeds and Stories - Emily Stoner, PATH Floral Co
Emily has had a huge journey and writes about her very personalised ambitions for her business and is starting a cut flower seed collective. Definitely get in touch with her if it sounds like something you'd be interested in!
Spotlight on Roses - Wendy Rose, The Chalk Rose
Wendy and I grew flowers on the same farm for a little over a year before I had kids and moved away. She is a master rose grower, and was SO GENEROUS with her knowledge. She lists favourite roses for cutting and how to care for them. Also, her surname is actually Rose. So... you know it's real!
The Tools Remember - Niki Senior, The English Herbalist
Niki's words again (she wrote a brilliant piece in Issue 2 as well) drop me into another time. I love reading her work and love the sense of meaning and magic she brings to otherwise very ordinary objects and moments.
So that's about it for issue 3. It is packed with goodies for you. The feedback we've received has been awesome and I'm so proud to be doing this work. Thank you so much for being here and supporting/encouraging/sharing etc etc. It means the world!
