Issue 3 - BTS/Breakdown Part 1

Issue 3. My heart. I really, really love this one. Here's how the first few articles came to be!

Saving Seed - Hati Colvin, The Dahlia Wood

Hati came to me and told me she had struggled with figuring out how to save seeds. Which seeds come true - how do you find out - how far apart do different colours need to be if the seeds are prone to cross-pollination? She has written a cracking article on her journey, which is so encouraging for anyone else who wants to learn more about saving seed!

Farmer–Florist. Laurenne Hopkins Flowers Interview

Laurenne is a rare gem of a woman who has curated her world with such a degree of intention and has ended up with a life and business that are absolutely winning for her. She runs a flower farm and huge events floristry business, and spends her days flowering with her best friends in tow. A truly heartening read.

In Conversation: The Prairie Edit x The Soil Smiths

This is an edited transcript of an in-person conversation between Ana (The Prairie Edit), Daniel (Soil Smiths/Soil Ecology Lab) and me (editor). We organised it during the second or third heatwave of the summer and I'm so, so glad it's in the magazine. It's full of very essential information if you're a grower. We sat with cups of tea and chatted for two hours (I did have to cut down the chat somewhat to fit it into the magazine - though I'd like to release the whole thing as a podcast at some point).

Plant of the Month - Claire Brown PlantPassion

Claire has been so generous with her wealth of knowledge over her 30+ years of flower farming, and this regular feature to the magazines is no exception. She is such a pleasure to work with.

An 1840s Flower Journal - Sofie Stewart, Editor

Picture me with a Richard E Grant-type smile the entire time I was writing this. I just happened upon these British journals (essentially magazines) and couldn't believe some of the stuff in there. I just had to write about this little section I found!

The Side-Hustle Flower Farm - Charlotte Heavisides, Flowers on the Hill

Charlotte emailed me saying how strongly she felt about growers who felt their impact was too tiny to matter, and could she write an article for them? I said a resounding yes, and this article came back to me a few weeks later. It's a gorgeous read - a lovely reminder that even if you're growing a few small stems, you can make a big difference to your local community.

Diary of a first year flower farmer - Jen Howarth, Wirral Flower Farm

The third instalment of Jen's diary. She is so open and willing to show all the ups and the downs of setting up a farm. It's such hard work, and I love that she doesn't shy away from writing about that side of it. She's going to do one more instalment in issue 4, and then we have a new diary writer for 2027 😍

Part 2 coming soon!
